Chocolat
by girlinafoodfrenzy
More rainy day baking here and for tonight I’ve organised a special treat. This cake is inspired by one of my favourite Cookbooks and especially by the ‘Chocolate’ chapter in The French Kitchen, by Joanne Harris & Fran Warde.
There is a book & subsequently a film also by Joanne Harris of which you might recognize, the title being Chocolat
This cake for me is a marriage of juicy seasonal pears, rich chocolate and a light moist crumb. It’s a bit sentimental but in a way this cake is a tribute to that incredible film which so happens to be playing on the Telly tonight.
Either way, I’ve got my date organised for later with a slice of this Upside down Chocolate & Pear GΓ’teau (sorry honey)…

This gateau looks fabulous!!! Chocolate and pear are truly made for each other

I hope so! One of the things I love about the cake is the contrast between the wedges and the dark chocolate, oh how I love chocolate right now!
One of my favorite movies! It’s especially great on rainy days. Your gateau looks delicious. I was just given a sack of apples. Hmmm…. Do you think I could substitute the pears for apples? And maybe top it with carmel sauce?
That sounds like an incredible combination. My friend is visiting tomorrow and I plan on serving these cake wedges with dark chocolate sauce too.
For me a rainy day film would have to be Amelie too
yum yum, love the combination of chocolate and pear!
Love that everyone agrees that Pears & Chocolate are a match! My tummy agreed with me too
Good stuff….banana and chocolate too…..other one of my favorites!
Fabulous flavor combination. Nice technicque. You make me jealous.
Ha ha, I think I’m the one who has to be jealous of your fabulous Sous Vide machine! Just think, pears sous vide…
Pears sous vide are definitely on the list. I want to do some veggies first though. I’m reading Thomas Keller’s book “Under Pressure” and white asparagus sous vide becomes translucent. They look insanely good.
They sound insanely good too. Looking forward to seeing those and as it’s winter time here I have to get my summer time food hit by scouring food blogs now!
What I want to do now is watch that film again while eating some of your chocolate and pear upside down cake. So cosy, comforting and delicious! You created a lovely atmosphere in this post, as you so often do. The cake looks mouthwateringly good.
Thank you Lorna! I was really racking my brain and thinking of some new ideas for the blog, lo & behold I saw inspiration from an ad break on the Telly! But I’m sincerely grateful that you enjoy the blog and I hope the text and images convey a story that people truly do want to read…
You’re right, there has been a lot of chocolate going around the past day haha
Everyone has been in a chocolate mood and I would happily help myself to some of this cake!
I know, between us all we should have shares in Cadbury’s or Hershey’s!
You found my soft spots, Girl: chocolate, good books, and good flicks.
But a chocolate and pear gateau! Ooh la la!
Thank you Robin! If it’s any consolation those would be my soft spots too
i bet these flavors are fab together!
Thanks buttercreambarbie! They’re certainly tummy approved
I’m so in the mood for chocolate and this hits the spot! We have Fathers Day this weekend, a perfect dessert. Yum!
