ABC…Mollecular Gastronomy @ N2 Extreme Gelato
by girlinafoodfrenzy
So today folks was a special discovery indeed. In fact, I write so often from home, blogging about the dishes I’m cooking at school, the food I’m making at home and general rambles and la-la’s that I sometimes forget to write about the things I eat (outside of the house & blog)
But today friends, is not that day. Tonight your Giaff and her guy have found something so wild, so wacky and seriously fun that I really must share it with you all and especially my fellow Sydney Folk. It would be a crime to keep this all to ourselves and here it is N2 Extreme Gelato
You guessed it right! Located somewhere in the heart of Chinatown on Dixon Street is a wonderful lab where fun, science and dessert marry together. I’m talking liquid nitrogen N2 and a whole lot of creativity and merriment. I’m not going to spoil the surprise that awaits you there but if you’re anything like me and love a culinary adventure… then fellow Sydney folk, get thee to Chinatown soon.
This chance discovery happened after another (wonderful culinary adventure aka dinner beforehand) and even after possibly eating some of the best chicken in Sydney, we knew we had to try one!
As my poor ole’ Molecular Gastronomy Kit, sits virtually unused (a birthday present from my beloved) I have since vowed to get handy & wacky it up, in the kitchen soon.
But of course there is movement afoot…, a bit more of which I’ll tell you in my next post. So for now, you’ll hopefully be content with visions of liquid ice and creamy confections and I look forward to hearing of all your culinary adventures soon!

Heston would be proud of you!
Ha ha, I think he might be more proud of these Lab Happy folk but yes, I did do a double take with them all in the lab coats and thick black frames! It’s hard to describe it, but I was in icecream and science, heaven!!!
Liquid nitrogen gelato? Wow! I would love to try it. Ha-ha, we await with much anticipation your future post of a dish you craft using your molecular gastronomy kit.
It’s just like icecream only better! They add lots of amazing things into the mix, like fruit, crunchy bits & more! I was seriously in (icecream heaven.) I’m not sure when it all gets packed up but once we’re settled in I aim to get back to cooking, baking & blogging per usual
This looks really special, and I like the mix-ins for texture! Looking forward to more molecular experiments.
Thank you! But truly I was just a participant in tonight’s fun proceedings! We ate a blackberry cheesecake and it was tasty as! As for my kit it’s stashed away somewhere in a box but soon, I promise
I see I’m going to have to go there so I can get some of that gelato! And the sooner the better…
Hi Meg, I’m not sure the Italians would approve but my taste buds certainly did. The whole kit out with kichen aid mixers and N2 tanks, goggles the whole lot was a lot of fun! Thanks for stopping by
Molecular experiments and gelato? Now that is the way to make someone interested in science
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
I hope you get to try it soon, I’d say it’d be a well deserved study break!
I love gelato! But I’ve never looked up what the difference is between gelato and ice cream or frozen yogurt.
I think it’s just because things sound better in Italian! Plus it’s a bit fun & mad when you start experimenting with chemistry!
Oh, please do tell us non-aussie’s what flavors they had!
Ah ha! There were actually a few wacky ones, spicy strawberry (with chilli or pepper I think?) we opted for blackberry cheesecake (there was also blueberry,) medicinal chinese cough syrup, chocolate, earl grey tea with caramel (sold out) and muddy cream (aka cookies & cream!) I’m bound to stop by again so will tell you if anything new pops up.
Packing is going well and steadily. It’s a school day tomorrow but I will be straight back into it on Tuesday! Fingers crossed!!!
Medicinal chinese cough syrup?????? I would have gotten that one just for the weird factor! How cool! Funny that molecular gastronomy was pioneered about and hour away from my home, but there really hasn’t been any trickle down to day to day things like that. Will keep the fingers crossed for ya…..I myself will have to start packing too…..yipes!!
