Beer O’Clock
by girlinafoodfrenzy
Sometimes there are days which just scream for beer O’clock, it’s that time of the day when you know a cool bubbly ale is just around the corner. Those days might also call for afternoon tea, in which you might think of scones, teacakes and the like too.
How about a genius recipe which manages to combine both?
I’ve fallen slightly in love with a few pics out there which call for biscuits or scones and a little savoury nibble on the side. Better yet, I’ve found a way to incorporate a well loved beverage with a nice light dough which will have you praising Pat from Illawara and her incredible recipe for some beer scones and my little addition of some maple candied bacon.
It’s a perfect recipe which is tried and tested by the ABC and me! It will get you salivating like nothing else whilst those yeasty scones bake and that sizzling candied bacon hit the plate.
I dare you not to enjoy a bite or few…

Hey Uru, found you too
I’m a big fan of lemonade in place of the beer too (but somehow, bacon, beer and maple syrup) was calling my name that afternoon!
Beer in scones? Whatever next? I’m off to look at your recipe…
Hi Lorna! I know, next thing I’ll be dousing it all in whiskey. Mmm, whiskey marmalade comes to mind…
That beer scone recipe looks amazing! I’ve made lemonade scones before but these sound way more interesting. And once again your photos have made me realise that I really need to amp the ante with the pix on my blog.
Hi Hungry mum. It’s definite baking weather of late and I just wanted a nice batch of scones for the weekend. Re the lemonade I know what you mean, it always works so well in giving a light airiness to the dough. Similar with the beer, though the yeast and hops flavour is pre leant.
I think a drizzle of honey and cheddar would benefit these too…
Oh lordy lordy lordy…….two of my favorite things in one! Alice, you’ve outdone yourself young lady! Yum yum…….I wish I could bite that piece of bacon off the picture! This is on my to-do list!!!!
Better yet Carla, (mum has given me those two recipes for Kimchi and BBQ pork buns
) coming up soon!
As for the beer scones it’s something that most folk have on hand, I sometimes have cream and always have flour so it’s a no brainier for me when I’m peckish!
This recipe might be controversial as many folk in Australia like to use lemonade to bake their scones! I like both methods…
Beer scones and candied bacon. I think I’m in love.
I know, it’s such man food-but I prissied it up with my baking skills. Sadly my bloke wasn’t too keen at first but I think he’ll come round in the end.
Your pictures are amazing. They are so well laid out as well. In love with candied bacon and it’s picture. I’ve never had luck making scones. They always turn out hard as brick. I’m willing to try anything to make any improvements.
Oh wow, I’d never have thought hat because you’ve got such amazing baking skills.
I will just add that the lemonade or beer works in keeping the dough light & airy. It also helps if you don’t over handle the scones before baking and I always find the cream works best to prevent the scones from becoming dry (or hard,) butter just won’t cut it in this case!
As for the pics, I was worried about my choice of colour filters but your comment made my day!
Aaahhh beer o’clock, my favourite time of day! Even better with fresh scones and delicious candied bacon!
Beer o clock was never as satisfying as this
That candied bacon looks super amazing, I want those
Lol, thank you! Finally I get to showcase something that you want instead of me wondering over to your blog and drooling at those beautiful pics too!
Princess Alice am a scone boy from way back
Bradamente
Yes and there’s a pavlova on its way soon too!
What a fantastic idea!
Nothing as complicated as your pastry work but still nourishing and rewarding all the same. Plus now I’m thinking ham and mustard filled beer scones too…. Mmm-mm…
I’m loving the idea for mustard beer scones! What about pumpkin beer bread?
Hey Megan, loving your idea for pumpkin scones too. Sweet, beer and yeasty is ideal autumn food I’d say
Oooh lovely. And I hear you on beer o’clock (or gin o’clock)
Lol, gin o clock eh? That works just as well for me!
beer o’clock… heheh… nice name for these scones
Thank you! Beer o’clock is a favourite around here, as well as scone o’clock now
Oh boy, I want some!!
Hey Lily Sue, I did think of you when I made these! I wondered if you’d ever tried scones with beer before
I have not. I need to try these!
Hi Alice, these look out of this world. I love savoury scones but in the UK they are only stretch as far as cheese. These look the bees knees.
Dave.
Hi Dave, thank you for stopping by. The maple bacon and beer makes it a ‘special treat’ I love a good cheese & onion scone too. Promise it’s a simple dough and worth the effort!
