The Supermarket Incident…
by girlinafoodfrenzy
Folks sometimes ask me about the title, “Why girl in a food frenzy?” I’ve answered that it’s simply because there are quite a few frenzy filled moments in my life. Here’s a classic giaff moment from the other day:
We were shopping in the supermarket on Sunday night (and in somewhat of a rush too.). I was in the cosmetics aisle, picking up soap, bath gel, deodorant & the like. As it was a very crowded aisle, my sweetheart hovered at the end and we agreed we’d meet back at the toilet paper/tissues etc. I eventually returned to our trolley (he’d gone for a little wander,) and dumped my stuff into it. I saw my sweetie had bought the wrong toilet paper, so swapped for our usual brand Quilton and put the other stuff back on my shelf…
That is, until in I saw my sweetheart with our trolley, quickly heading in my direction asking “what are you doing!” and I noticed the bewildered asian gentleman, who stood beside me & wondering what I was doing in swapping some of his groceries out and putting things back on the shelf…
Yes folks, that’s when the total embarrassment & mortification set in…
Moral of the story, ‘don’t shop in a hurry,’ which roughly translates to here’s a meal you can cook in a hurry! Aka, the ingredient shop which led to the supermarket incident from Sunday night.
These Spatchcock with Fennel rub & crispy duck-fat Kipfler Potatoes might just be worth the public humiliation I endured the other night.
Whether I can ever show my face at that supermarket again is yet to be decided….

Alice sound like u are having fun at the supermarket
It was pretty funny,
especially when I had to move everything out of the other persons trolley!
Hahahaha!!! I can just imagine the old man’s face!!!! I have to admit….I probably would have run away, it kind of reminds me of those moments when we were really little kids, holding your parents hands, you don’t even realize you’ve let go, then hold them back again and they aren’t your parents! Or maybe that hasn’t happened to anyone else, who knows….And now on to the meal…..total comfort food! Love it! And the potatoes cooked in duck fat…..oh…so decadent! I also had duck last night…..and added duck fat to my soup! Yummo!
Hi Carla, it was one of my most embarrassing moments to date. The look of horror on my sweetheart’s face was the first teller, having to fish out my groceries was so embarrassing and I felt the whole aisle must be staring and laughing inwardly, lol!
As for the little kid thing, a kid came up to me in the supermarket and kept shouting out ‘mum!’ one day, guessed we looked similar, ha ha! By kid I mean teenager, he wasn’t lost just wanted stuff!
Fantastic. Love it
Thank you! Just had to share a bit of humour around
I love this so much!!!!!
Made my day.
Those potatoes look amazing. xxxx
Thank you miss Soph! It was a classic moment and one I’m never going to live down, especially as it’ll probably be brought up each time I go to do the shopping!
Great story! Thank you for giving me a good laugh. And those herbed potatoes look fantastic!
Hi Laura, it was a pretty memorable moment to the week! Love a good potato and was eyeing off your beautiful butternut polenta too the other day
Thank you for the laugh my friend – shopping with you can’t be boring
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
It was a classic moment of a lot of ummmm, ‘did I just do that!’ Highly embarrassing, you should try it!
lmao – I do crazy sh*t like that all the time, usually because I work myself into a frenzy. The Husband tells me I need to calm the hell down! This dish sounds deeeelicious…especially those duck-fat potatoes, yum!
Never say no to duck fat potatoes! I do crazy stuff all the time too, I just don’t want my readers to think I’m a fruit-loop
but alas I am!
Lol! You’ve got me laughing so hard my eyes are tearing up! So funny Alli. I do however love these potatoes. Yummy!
Hey Karista! It was a very embarrassing moment, luckily followed by hilarity! I was chuckling all the way to the car park afterwards too! Love a good crispy spud and chicken
Hilarious! Totally something I would do!
Lol, well if I see someone trying to make off with the content of the trolley in Coles I’ll come over and introduce myself, ha, ha!
Most definitely!
That made me laugh out loud!
You are a funny one. It reminds me of an incident I had recently in which I was shopping with someone else who had control of the trolley and I had gone off to find something. When I got back to where our trolley had been I found that it had the right things in it but far too much of everything. In place of 5 carrots there were 10, there was twice the amount of milk, etc. I was just putting my stuff into the trolley wondering why on earth there was so much of everything when something clicked and I saw an item that we wouldn’t have bought, and then I realised it was someone else’s trolley. The really strange thing was that this person was buying virtually the same stuff as us, only double the amounts.
Wow, you met your grocery doppelgänger! That’s actually hilarious, if you think bout it, there are so many trolleys in an aisle with so many people about and Sunday evenings can get super busy with that last minute weekend shop! It was totally mortifying at first, but even funnier I kept trying to avoid the poor guy for the remainder of our shipping trip too
in the dairy aisle…in the frozen foods… Etc
Ha ha, bumping into him in every aisle!
That is *so* the type of thing I would do! Here are some words to live by: online grocery shopping. You’ll never have to face the bewildered Asian gent again
Lol, I do that too Hungrymum! Yes, it was a typical gaff by Giaff, but it makes for a funny story and didn’t want to bore you all but (it’s one of the most popular posts) only cause everyone’s had a good chuckle too!
I understand where you are coming from, the same thing happens to me sometimes in a supermarket!! I love fennel, either seeds or bulb!
It was the silliest thing I’ve done in a long while! I dare say it might not be the last but I’m thrilled that everyone’s responded to my shopping blunders! The fennel rub and chicken was incredibly fragrant as you can imagine
Too funny! I’m sure you didn’t think it was funny then but this will make you laugh for a along long time. But look at the delicious meal you came up with from it all! Love the potatoes specially! And fennel…I better not start talking about it..remember last time? Hahaha!
It was a pretty hilarious moment, I didn’t know whether to laugh or (run and hide) at first! I think that gentleman will be wary the next time he shops, he’ll be hanging on for dear life to that trolley…;)
Go on! I was thinking of you and your equally enthusiastic love for fennel seeds when I wrote the recipe up!!! Enjoy!
Hahahaha…This reminds me of shopping with the Baby Lady when she did the same thing. =))
Hi Richard, very relieved to hear I’m not the only one out there! This post ignited a fun topic of shopping blunders and bloopers, I’m thrilled to say! It was a classic run and hide moment for me
LOL! Fabulous story!
It was one of the funniest events of my week, funny and mortifying
Hahaaa love it!! I’ve definitely come very, very close to that. A great story behind a great name. Yours is definitely one of the catchiest that makes me remember to keep coming back to it!
Thank you Erika, I’ve got a few of those moments up my sleeve and silly foibles that keep happening. Pleased to hear you liked the story though
You really had me laughing…but not about the beautiful meal. I can just imagine the man’s face as you were exchanging items in his basket. Too funny.
True! It was a giaff ‘gaff’ as I’m want to call it! Seem to be doing a lot of those at the moment too
What a lovely story!!! No worries . I think we’ve all had embarrassing things happen to us. . at the grocery store!
And wow! Hello? Spatchcock with Fennel rub & crispy duck-fat Kipfler Potatoes?! What? AMAZING. . going to the recipe now!
Id actually almost forgotten that had happened. This last weekend I was shopping solo and I hung onto my little basket with my mitts so tight
As for fennel rubs and duck fat it was a match made in heaven. Ok duck fat anything!!!
I love the story and i love the dish.
Thank you, it was a moment I won’t soon forget
The chicken and fennel rub was tasty and well worth the shopping incident.
Funny story, that indeed is very embarassing
All of the above, both embarrassing, funny and hilarious in hindsight. Thanks for stopping by!
