When the city kids escape the city, blackberry picking, sunshine and grass.

There are those days, when you just have to escape the city… Actually, my sweetheart and I are originally country kids, who moved to the big smoke to escape the country.
Is it ironic then, that occasionally we need to get back to the country from time to time! You know what they say, you can take the kid outta the country but you can’t take the country outta the kid.
Just an hour and a half from Sydney, is an area called the Southern Highlands. There’s berry picking, antique stores to scour, beautiful country homes & history to discover. What’s more there’s a plethora of tasty souvenirs to be discovered and I find those, to be the discovery of the (very best) kinds.
In fact, it may just be my new favourite escape and hopefully yours too should you ever visit this way. Don’t fret if you can’t, as we may still channel the sweet smell of blackberries together at home. Perhaps covered with a smattering of sugar and baked with a nice buttery pastry. I do believe the word Galette came to mind…
Ingredients/Blackberry Galette:
1 cup of blackberries,
1 sheet puff pastry,
Few tbsp of raw sugar,
Few tbsp of melted butter,
1 egg, beaten for the glaze,
(Optional) icing sugar to dust.

Divine! I miss summer and can’t wait for it’s arrival. Only six more months
Those berries look fabulous. We have blackberries everywhere here and during the summer we end up with buckets full to freeze, eat out of the bucket and bake with. Looks like you had a lovely time Alli!
Thanks Karista! I thought of you instantly and those delicious sauces you make. The blackberries are so plentiful, we had 1.4kg and went crazy with the berries (and ice cream…whoops!) Still have at least 1/2 kilo left for another day of baking, (or sauces too.) Sending you some Sydney Summer Vibes
Love the video! Beautiful
And this looks delicious. i love blackberries!! Mmmm
Hey Lily Sue, thank you! I know you appreciate some good music & food
The blackberries were so worth the trek too!
I bet! Yum, I want fresh picked blackberries
Oh, you made my mouth water! What a great way to use blackberries, I’m going to have to try it. A lovely trip out to the country too, I enjoyed the video!
Thanks Lorna. I must say, I’m amazed that it’s a mere hour plus out of Sydney, green grass, farms, cows & more. Plus the homes & historic houses are very beautiful too. The tart was an understated end to an already glorious day, plus there was ice-cream of course
Is the Southern Highlands on the way to the Blue Mountains? I remember lots of lovely antique shops in that area. Your galette is making me long for summer …only a few more months and likely snow dumps to go!
What a wonderful memory you have! There are a couple of ways to get there, but it’s pretty much an hour + out of the city-skirts. It was the first time I’ve been fruit picking (near Sydney) and we’ve already got our eyes in gooseberries & raspberries coming up soon!
Those blackberries and galette look delicious! We are getting hit with snow and cold air and I can not wait to get out and get that sunshine and country air! Take care!
Thank you! It’s been a great summer. The weather has been varied but we’ve enjoyed getting out and it looks like Autumn will be on its way soon. As for blackberry/tarts we’ve still got another half kilo left of the gems
You have me thinking about summer with your tasty looking blackberry galette and it can’t come too soon as it is snowing right now.
How lovely Karen. I’ve been pondering the change of season and delicious dishes I want to try next once the weather cools. Those blackberries are still going strong in our household too, we have so many left in the freezer!
Berry delicious! Theyre fresh as well, Nice!
It’s so lovely in the Southern Highlands. Even though the city might be stuffy & humid in the height of summer, it’s still lovely to get back to the green grass, fruits and little corner stores. It was a perfect day trip!
Blackberries are really expensive to get here in Singapore, I wish I can go berry picking one day there! Really beautiful and your galette looks super delicious!
Hi Jasline, thank you
I must say, fresh berries which were barely picked a few hours before & (then) baked into something tasty. Well it’s the ultimate treat! There’s such an incredible array if beautiful tropical fruits on Singapore, you wouldn’t want for anything else! I love rambutan, dragon fruit, different citrus like pomelo’s etc and then you also have the infamous chilli crab! Blackberries have nothing on Singapore!
omg blackberries!! Yummy! I miss them so much! Used to be so easily available back in Vancity!! haha.. I’m the total opposite of you! I’ve always been a city gal! I need all that hustle and bustle and business all the time!
Me too (sometimes!) I imagine there’s many foods you’re enjoying after returning to Singapore. Amazing varieties of tropical fruits, seafood etc. I remember eating Sting Ray for the first time in a spicy Nonya style chilli say e. straight to heaven!!!
But yes, sometimes you just crave something berrylicious
What a beautiful galette. I love fresh blackberries but the seeds get stuck in my teeth.
It’s the price I have to pay and this galette looks scrumptious. It will be a few more months before we get fresh blackberries here. There are a couple of farms in the area where you can pick your own. Baby Lady and I always love doing that.
So envious of your summer time, and I can just smell the blackberries baking from over here. How terrific!
Just can’t wait for berry foraging season! Blackberries… YUM
Oh my, blackberries are my favorite! I’ve gotta make this!
This galette looks GORGEOUS and has me craving summer already. I cannot wait to make it!!
Thank you! I’ve been very frugal in saving another 1/2 kilo of those delicious fruit. I plan to spoil myself & my sweetheart with the delicious fruits right in the dread of winter sometime
Gooooorgeous video….love the blackberry picking! And the galette looks so enticing! Can’t wait to be off this diet to be able to indulge in some delicious dessert! Nice escapade too!!!
Gorgeous Carla, I’m sure your loving fiancée would love you and whatever you bake in the lead up to your fabulous wedding. For me, (blackberry picking) was one of the happiest afternoons I’d have (with my sweetheart,) in a while! Look forward to the summer and more, I’m sure it’ll be one to remember as a newlywed too
